Description
TheĀ cat gecko for saleĀ (Aeluroscalabotes felinus) is aĀ speciesĀ ofĀ geckoĀ found inĀ Indonesia,Ā Malaysia,Ā Singapore,Ā CambodiaĀ andĀ Thailand. It is theĀ only speciesĀ within theĀ genusĀ Aeluroscalabotes. It is commonly called the cat gecko because of its habit of curling up with itsĀ tailĀ around itself when it sleeps, similar to aĀ cat.
Description
The cat gecko is a lightly built gecko, typicallyĀ red–brownĀ in color withĀ whiteĀ spots on its body, and solid white under its chin, and sometimes to the belly. Some specimens have brown blotching along the back. It is considered to be one of the more primitive geckos, and is physically quite similar in body structure to the fewĀ fossilsĀ of early geckos which have been discovered. They can grow to approximately 18Ā cm (7Ā inches), with males being smaller than females.

Behavior of Cat Gecko For Sale
Semi-arborealĀ and preferring cool, humid,Ā montaneĀ rainforestĀ habitats, the cat gecko is primarilyĀ nocturnalĀ andĀ insectivorous, consuming a wide variety of smallĀ insectsĀ and otherĀ arthropods.
Taxonomy
The species has been redescribed by several different taxonomists, leading to some early confusion in its classification, but its distinctly differentĀ morphologicalĀ characteristics have clarified its status.
There are two recognizedĀ subspeciesĀ ofĀ Aeluroscalabotes felinus:
- Aeluroscalabotes felinus felinus (Günther, 1864)
- Aeluroscalabotes felinus multituberculatusĀ (Kopstein, 1927)
In captivity
The cat gecko is occasionally kept as aĀ petĀ gecko, though they are not very commonly available andĀ captive breedingĀ is known to be difficult. Wild caught specimens often have heavyĀ parasiteĀ loads, and they are easily susceptible to stress, so care can be difficult.
Conservation status
Exact population counts of the cat gecko are unknown, though it is not considered to be common throughout itsĀ range. It does not hold any particular conservation status, except in Thailand, where collection and export is prohibited.
GeckosĀ are small, mostly carnivorousĀ lizardsĀ that have a wide distribution, found on every continent exceptĀ Antarctica. Belonging to theĀ infraorderĀ Gekkota, geckos are found in warmĀ climates. They range from 1.6 to 60Ā centimetresĀ (0.6 to 23.6Ā inches).
Geckos are unique among lizards for theirĀ vocalisations, which differ from species to species. Most geckos in the familyĀ GekkonidaeĀ use chirping or clicking sounds in their social interactions.Ā Tokay geckosĀ (Gekko gecko) are known for their loudĀ mating calls, and some other species are capable of making hissing noises when alarmed or threatened. They are the most species-rich group of lizards, with about 1,500 different species worldwide.
All Cat Gecko For Sale, except species in the family EublepharidaeĀ lack eyelids; instead, the outer surface of the eyeball has aĀ transparentĀ membrane, theĀ brille. They have a fixedĀ lensĀ within eachĀ irisĀ that enlarges in darkness to let in more light. Since they cannotĀ blink, species without eyelids generally lick their own brilles when they need to clear them of dust and dirt, in order to keep them clean and moist.
Unlike most lizards, Cat Gecko For Sale are usually nocturnalĀ and have excellentĀ night vision; theirĀ colour visionĀ in low light is 350 times more sensitive thanĀ human eyes.Ā The nocturnal geckos evolved fromĀ diurnalĀ species, which had lost theĀ rod cellsĀ from their eyes. The gecko eye, therefore, modified itsĀ cone cellsĀ that increased in size into different types, both single and double.
Three different photo-pigments have been retained, and are sensitive to ultraviolet, blue, and green. They also use a multifocal optical system that allows them to generate a sharp image for at least two different depths.Ā While most gecko species are nocturnal, some species are diurnal and active during the day, which have evolved multiple times independently.
